On October 13-14, 2018 the Shanghai Theater Academy hosted the first ever in Shanghai the conference on the Polish theater "From Jerzy Grotowski to Krystian Lupa, the influence of Polish theater in the world", inspired by the growing interest in Polish theater art in China in recent years.

The conference was co-organized by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the UNESCO International Theater Institute

The Shanghai Theater Academy is a leading university in China in the field of theater, film, television and new media, both actors, directors and other specialists in the above fields.

During the conference, the Eastern European Theaters Studies Center was inaugurated on the basis of previously signed cooperation agreements with universities in Europe, including the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The history of the conference dates back to 2017 – the visit of the Chinese delegation of the Shanghai Theater Academy at the Faculty of Philology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University.

The first result of the cooperation decision at that time was the international conference in Shanghai, whose honorary guest, thanks to the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, was an outstanding Polish theater director, playwright and translator - Krystian Lupa.

Lupa is for Chinese critics and researchers a symbol of Poland's theater achievements.

The meeting was led by PhD. Artur Duda from the Faculty of Philology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, and in the discussion took part prof. Huang Changyong and prof. Hu Zhiyi.
